The City Archives of Örebro and the genealogical society in Örebro made these indexes over emigrants and immigrants from Örebro län (the county of Örebro) in a project between the years 1994-1997. The Emigrant Index for Örebro län 1840-1930 contains appx. 48600 persons who emigrated to other countries. The vast majority emigrated to the U.S. An Immigrant Index was made at the same time, which contains several emigrants who returned. The Immigrant Index for Örebro län 1840-1930 contains appx. 9500 persons.
Making the indexes availible worldwide
Ever since the start of the project, the indexes has continously been made availible at the City Archives in Örebro. In the fall of 1999 the City Archives decided to also make them availible from the Internet as downloadable files for people all around the world with interests in swedish emigration. After downloading the indexes one can do searches etc. at home. For example one can open the unzipped .txt-file in MS Excel, MS Access or some other databaseapplication, and then sort and search the material and make print outs.
What we would like in return...
The indexes were completed in 1997. This however does not mean that we have finished to collect material about the emigration from Örebro län. Even more interesting is to find out what happened to "our emigrants". Here is your chance to contribute to the Emigrant Index. We are interested in for example:
- general information (occupation, family, children, adresses, death date etc)
- pictures
- letters
- stories about the emigrant´s life
- addresses to living relatives
The additional information we find about the emigrant, is filed in the Emigrant Index at the City Archives in Örebro. Emigrants with the letter "B" in the field "Bilaga finns" in the Index indicates that there is more information filed at the City Archives in Örebro. This information can also be the link between decendants of the emigrant and relatives the old country. Connections already has been made in this way.
